Malik leased an apartment with his roommate Ana. Jae, who lived elsewhere, came to the apartment for two hours to package pills for sale. Riley, Ana's cousin, had slept on the couch for the past three nights while visiting from out of town. Police knocked on the apartment door without a warrant after receiving a tip. Malik opened the door. When police asked to search, Malik said, "No, you cannot come in." Ana then stepped into the hallway and said, "I live here too; you can search the living room and kitchen."
Police entered and found pills on the living-room table, a laptop on the couch, and Riley's backpack under a blanket. They opened the laptop and found a spreadsheet of drug sales. They did not open Riley's backpack. Using the spreadsheet, police identified a buyer who later agreed to testify. Two days later, police obtained a warrant for the apartment based partly on the spreadsheet and partly on information from an independent confidential informant. The warrant search found more pills in Malik's bedroom.
